Spicy and Smoky Margarita

I have three “go-to” drink orders: a Gin and Tonic, an Old Fashioned, or a Margarita. As much as I love the classically clean version of these cocktails, every once in a while it’s nice to mix up the flavors and layers of the drink. After trying a smoky Margarita at Seattle’s very own Ray’s Cafe, I knew I had to figure out how to make my own at home.

Spicy Smoked Margarita

  • Servings: 1 cocktail
  • Difficulty: easy

  • 1 ounce 100% agave tequila (I prefer Reposado)
  • 1 ounce Mezcal (I prefer Del Maguey Vida)
  • 3.4 ounce triple sec or Grand Marnier
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice from a fresh lime
  • 1/2 oz honey
  • 1 jalapeño cut into 1/4″ slices
  • smoked sea salt mixed with smoked paprika for the rim
  1. Add 1-2 jalapeño slices to a cocktail shaker. Muddle. Add ice to 1/2 way full. Add the lime juice and honey. Add the Mezcal, tequila, and triple sec. Shake well.
  2. To make the salt rim, rub the rim of the glass with the used lime and dip in plate of salt/paprika mix.
  3. Strain the contents of the cocktail  shaker into your salt rimmed glass. Add 2-3 ice cubes and enjoy immediately.

Berry Gin and Tonics

Blackberry, Grapefruit, Mint- Gin & Tonics

Seattle has been oh, so beautiful these last few weeks. As summer approaches, all I can think about are the wonderful activities that end up taking over my calendar. The days are long and often spent with friends and family. The PNW, has so much to offer; kayaking, camping, hiking, music festivals, BBQs, and more.

Yesterday, I was invited to meet up with some of my nearest and dearest friends. The time was spent eating, drinking, catching up, and laughing hysterically (as always).

Between these individuals, a common “drink of choice” tends to be a gin and tonic. Cool, crisp, refreshing….and, in my mind, the epitome of summer.

As a contribution to the event, I wanted to create a spin to this classic (and favorite) cocktail. Although, it is impossible to beat the original, I have to say that this embodied the same traits: cool, crisp, and refreshing. Ahhhh, sips of summer…..life is good. 🙂

Blackberry, Grapefruit, and Mint- Gin & Tonics

  • Servings: 4-6
  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 8-12 oz of dry gin
  • 12-18oz of tonic water
  • 8-12 Tbsp grapefruit juice (or juice from 2 medium grapefruits)
  • 20-25 blackberries
  • 16-24 mint leaves
  • (optional: for a sweeter drink- 4-6 tsp of sugar)

Directions

  1. Set out 4-6 lowball cocktail glasses
  2. In each glass, add 3-4 blackberries and 3-4 mint leaves (+ 1 tsp of sugar for a sweeter beverage)
  3. Muddle the berries and leaves until paste forms
  4. Add 2 Tbsp grapefruit juice to each glass
  5. Add 2 oz gin to each glass
  6. Add 2-3 oz tonic water to each glass
  7. Add 2-3 ice cubes per glass
  8. Garnish with grapefruit wedge and mint leaves

Grapefruit, Blood Orange, and Basil Infused Water

Grapefruit, blood orange, and basil infused water

Infused waters are one of my favorite ways to stay hydrated. These delicious “spa waters” as I like to call them, give your daily beverage a little kick without adding any sweetener. There are hundreds of variations and definitely one to suit your taste buds.

RECIPE:

1. Fill a juice pitcher with water

2. Add in fruits, vegetables, or herbs of choice. You can muddle the ingredients if you wish, or keep them whole for a more mild flavor.

3. Store in fridge overnight and let everything do it’s magic

POSSIBLE INGREDIENTS:

Fruits- berries, apple, cantaloupe, lemon, lime, cherries, oranges, pomegranates, pineapple, mango 

Vegetables- cucumber, celery, carrots, hot or sweet peppers 

Herbs- mint, basil, sage, rosemary, lavender, cilantro, thyme, stevia 

Spices- cinnamon stick or black pepper 

Fluid- water, sparkling water, tea 

*In this recipe I infused 1 grapefruit, 1 blood orange, and 8-10 basil leaves
